When you create an account and use Walking Up, we collect:

1.2 Location Information

Walking Up is a location-based social app. We collect:

  • Foreground Location: When you have the app open, we collect your precise location to display on the map and enable location-based features.
  • Background Location: When you explicitly choose to share your location with friends, we collect your location even when the app is in the background or closed. This only occurs when you actively enable location sharing and continues until you stop sharing or the sharing session expires.
  • Location Names: We may use reverse geocoding to convert coordinates into human-readable addresses for display purposes.

You have full control over location sharing:

  • You choose when to start and stop sharing your location
  • You select which friends can see your location
  • Location sharing sessions can have automatic expiration times
  • You can stop sharing at any time

1.3 Social and Activity Information

  • Friend connections and friend requests
  • Activity invitations ("pings") you create or respond to
  • Your responses to activity invitations (accept, decline, maybe)
  • Notes or messages attached to activity responses
  • Friend groups you create
  • Mute preferences for friends

1.4 Device Information

  • Device type and operating system
  • Push notification tokens (for delivering notifications)
  • App version information
  • Crash logs and error reports (for improving app stability)

1.5 Usage Information

  • Actions taken within the app
  • Timestamps of activities
  • Feature usage patterns (for improving the app experience)

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve the Walking Up service
  • Create and manage your user account
  • Enable you to connect with friends and coordinate activities
  • Send push notifications about friend requests, activity invitations, and responses
  • Share your location with friends you explicitly select
  • Display friends' shared locations on your map
  • Provide customer support
  • Detect, prevent, and address technical issues
  • Monitor and analyze usage patterns to improve user experience
  • Send you updates about the app (with your consent)

3. How We Share Your Information

3.1 With Other Users

  • Your profile information (name, avatar, status) is visible to your friends
  • Your location is shared only with friends you explicitly choose to share with
  • Your activity invitations are visible to friends you invite
  • Your responses to invitations are visible to the activity creator

3.2 With Service Providers

We use trusted third-party services to operate our app:

  • Supabase: Provides our database and authentication services. Your data is stored securely in Supabase's infrastructure.
  • Firebase (Google): Provides crash reporting (Crashlytics) and push notification delivery. Crash reports help us fix bugs and improve stability.
  • Expo: Delivers push notifications to your device.
  • Google Maps: Provides map functionality and location services.

These service providers have access to your information only to perform tasks on our behalf and are obligated to protect your data.

3.3 Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities (e.g., a court or government agency).

3.4 Business Transfers

If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction.

4. Data Storage and Security

  • Your data is stored on secure servers provided by Supabase
  • We use encryption for data in transit (HTTPS/TLS)
  • Authentication tokens are stored securely on your device using encrypted storage
  • We implement Row Level Security (RLS) policies to ensure users can only access their own data and data shared with them
  • We regularly review our security practices

While we strive to protect your personal information, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

5. Data Retention

  • Account data is retained as long as your account is active
  • Location data is stored temporarily and updated in real-time during active sharing sessions
  • Historical location data is not permanently stored once sharing ends
  • Activity/ping data is retained for your reference and is automatically cleaned up over time
  • If you delete your account, your personal data will be removed from our systems

6. Your Rights and Choices

6.1 Account Information

You can update your profile information at any time through the app's profile settings.

6.2 Location Sharing

  • You can start and stop location sharing at any time
  • You control which friends can see your location
  • You can set expiration times for sharing sessions
  • You can disable background location access in your device settings

6.3 Push Notifications

You can disable push notifications through your device settings at any time.

6.4 Account Deletion

You can request deletion of your account by contacting us. Upon deletion, we will remove your personal data from our active systems.

6.5 Data Access

You can request a copy of your personal data by contacting us at the email address below.

7. Children's Privacy

Walking Up is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us, and we will delete such information from our systems.

8. International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your country of residence. These countries may have data protection laws that are different from the laws of your country. By using the App, you consent to the transfer of your information to these countries.
